UPS Package Handler Part Time(25 hrs.) questions?

Who's worked as a p/t package handler at UPS before, specifically at NYC(Maspeth hub) or similar city. I recently applied for the job and quickly got an appointment set up for a night shift, which is great since I'm a full time college student. I've read elsewhere some bad things about this job w/ UPS, so I have a few questions before deciding to head out for the appointment:

1)What will happen at the appointment?

2)What's the deal with the odd hours for the appointment?

3)After the appointment, how much time will it take to actually start working?

4) As far as physical, I'm about 5'8", 173+ lbs, not "in shape", but I could lift "moderate" weights. How difficult would it probably be?(I shouldn't have dropped out of the gym, I'm such a lazy ***)

5)How's the work ethic? Any moral issues? Is there moral at the job?

6)How are the supervisors? Easy going or straight assholes?

I'm hoping for the best. I "desperately" need the unfortunate poor pay. Thanks in advance.

  • I was once offered the same job, but turned them down because I had a full time job and a child and could not risk a maybe thing for a sure one. In hindsight I was stupid.

The package handling position at UPS is always given to college students for a reason. UPS uses this job to hire many other positions, drivers, managers, etc. etc. And as the drivers are a union job, it is a pretty good gig if you can get it. Many college student end up dropping out of school once they realize their major will not offer the pay and benefits UPS does.

The downside is it is tough work, you have to be able to carry 75 lbs up to 20 yards for your entire shift. Reality is that the bulk of the boxes are around 20 pounds and your body will quickly adapt to the job. And like I said they offered me the job and I was 5'1" and 115 pounds soaking wet.

As for work ethic, moral issues, and supervisors, they will vary from hub to hub. No matter where you work in your life you will run into problems...life is not fair and there is no perfect world.

I know they expect you to work while you are on the clock, as most employers do. I also know that what you deem "unfortunate poor pay" is actually pretty darned good for a part-time unskilled job. Don't know where you would get a better one.

And the deal with the odd hour for the intervierw is that your job would be odd hours. If I remember correctly (and it has been more than a few years) you get one of two shifts, something like 2 am to 8 am or 6 pm to midnight. I could be off on that. So my guess is your first "test" is to see if you are comfortable with showing up on time on odd hours.

It sounds like you aren't working and could use the money. Try this, quit worrying about "what-ifs" and "maybes" and worry about working. There is no law that says if you take the job you cannot quit if you hate it.

And, as I love to remind people, 100% of something is a whole lot better than 100% of nothing, which is what you have now.

    Good luck
